Hello Bears
Olympic opening ceremonies can be traced back to the ancient Greek games. These ceremonies are a welcome to the games for the nations of the world, and a chance for the athletes themselves to celebrate the achievement of qualifying.
The 2012 ceremony in London will celebrate British culture and will be watched by up to 4 billion people.
Class 8 used the TASC Wheel to examine Opening Ceremonies. We thought about why the ceremony happens, and why the different parts of it have been included. Some of these ‘performances’ seemed a little strange – giant jellyfish, opera singers floating on wires, even people with flames coming out of their helmets – but the children understood that it was all inspired by the host country, its geography and its people.
Alex, Sue and Dave visited from the City Learning Centres and used video and online resources to help the children learn about the ceremonies. The children then used their imaginations and piles of coloured paper, fabrics, lollypop sticks and paints, as well as digital cameras and video cameras, to create and capture their performances for the 2012 opening ceremony.
Please take a look at some of our work below. We’d really like you to make some constructive comments so that we can complete the ‘evaluate’ and ‘communicate’ sections of the TASC Wheel. You can find more in the Purple Mash site – parents and children can login to see dances, artwork and more!
